Why choose smart film

Is PDLC smart film even a good choice for you? What are the benefits and what are the drawbacks of smart film? Why is it worth investing in PDLC specifically?

Privacy

There are various privacy options on the market, but only smart film delivers it in a second, at the click of a button. In the frosted state, smart film provides full privacy in both directions, without losing light — smart film lets up to 80% of daylight into the room.

UV and IR protection

Letting sunlight into a room with all its benefits also brings ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) rays — in other words, heat. Smart film blocks up to 99% of UV radiation, which significantly lowers indoor temperatures. Simply by using smart film, you save on air conditioning.

Space division

Glass surfaces can become a visual partition or an open space in just a few moments. That way one space can serve multiple functions without the need for classic walls, curtains or blinds. Smart film can also be installed in freestanding partitions, counter partitions, office partitions…

Environmental protection and energy efficiency

PDLC film enables the use of natural daylight while controlling privacy and the passage of solar radiation. Depending on the application and the characteristics of the building, it can help reduce the need for artificial lighting and cooling.

Added security

In the opaque state the film blocks the view into the space, which can help protect equipment, property and sensitive areas from unwanted glances. In certain configurations the film can also help retain glass shards after breakage.

Hygiene and sterility without curtains

PDLC film replaces classic textile curtains and mechanical blinds that can trap dust, allergens and other dirt. The smooth glass surface is easy to clean and disinfect with standard products, with no need to wash textiles and with minimal maintenance. It is especially suitable for healthcare facilities and hospitals, clinics, hotels, offices and other spaces with high hygiene standards.

Common drawbacks of smart film

The biggest cause of improper smart film operation is incorrect installation or preparation. PDLC film itself has no mechanical components that would break as such. The most common causes of failure are incorrectly placed or insufficiently protected busbars, improper sealing of the film edges, and power supply interruption.

The main reason we recommend the self-adhesive version as the most practical is that service is much easier. In the laminated version, the film is permanently placed between glass layers, and if the film fails, the glass must be removed from the frame to inspect the busbars. If the fault is irreparable, the glass either needs to be replaced entirely or permanent frosting remains.

With the self-adhesive version, access to the busbars is easier, and in extreme failure cases service can be resolved simply by removing the film and installing a new one.

All power supplies follow the same standard regardless of wattage, so replacing them is a painless and quick process.
